The dye industrie is the most "un-trustable" science amongst the chemical industry. Even industrially dyed threads look different with each dye lot. Humans are not machines - so results are even more accidental for hand dyed threads. This is what people like best about hand dyed and hand painted threads and fibers. There are real "collectors" amongst embroiderers which are waiting for each new dye lot to grab a new shade. Other are especially looking for multiple dye lots of the same colour to get a subtle shading.

The examples shown below would like to make you familiar with the different colours produced by using different materials. Especially the Potpourries schow you, how different fibers react. All materials shown under one colour are from the same dye lot but look completely different. There are silk, cotton, metallics, rayon, silk waste and an artist mailing card.

Colour charts for most of the materials from the Painter's Threads Collection are listed at the end of this page. They always show the most recent dye lot.
